Pat Harbison
Pat Harbison, trumpet, is the Retreat Director and will lead or co-lead most of the sessions.
Jazz trumpeter, composer, bandleader, and educator Pat Harbison is on the faculty of the Indiana University Jacobs School of Music, where he holds the position and rank of Professor of Jazz Studies and has taught jazz history, improvisation, jazz pedagogy, jazz trumpet, and ensembles. He has been on the faculty at the Jacobs School since 1997. He was on faculty at the University of Cincinnati College-Conservatory of music from 1984-1997. He was on the faculty of Jamey Aebersold’s Summer Jazz Workshops from 1976-2019. These workshops are the best-known and most widely attended jazz education events in the world. He is also the founding director of JazzRetreats, which stages small group jazz improvisation learning sessions for adult musicians in a retreat-like setting.
Pat became intent on a career in music in his early teens, when he became a protégé of jazz education pioneer, Jamey Aebersold. Jamey exposed him to the magic of jazz and instructed Pat in improvisation, arranging, and composition. After graduating from the University of Louisville where he studied trumpet with Leon Rapier, he spent time freelancing in New York City and studying with Carmine Caruso. He returned to his native Indiana for graduate study in jazz with David Baker, Dominic Spera, and trumpet with the legendary William Adam.
Pat has performed original music and his personal version of jazz standards with his own jazz groups and as guest soloist at major jazz concerts, festivals and clubs on six continents. He has recorded and released four CDs as leader or co-leader and is presently preparing to record his new quartet, PH & Organism. In addition to his work as a bandleader, Pat's credits include work with the innovative Caribbean Jazz fusion group Ritmos Unidos (including two CDs which received Grammy consideration), the Postmodern Jazz Quartet, the Jamey Aebersold Quintet, 4=One, the PsychoAcoustic Orchestra, John VonOhlen's Blue Wisp Big Band, and David Baker's 21st Century Bebop Band. In over four decades as a jazz trumpet artist and educator, Pat has taught aspiring musicians about jazz around the world. He is the author of many articles on jazz and trumpet, as well as several books, including Trumpetology, Technical Studies for the Modern Trumpet and Twenty Authentic Bebop Solos.

Jamey Aebersold is the recipient of the 2014 A.B. Spellman NEA Jazz Masters Award for Jazz Advocacy, bestowed upon an individual who has contributed significantly to the appreciation, knowledge, and advancement of jazz.
For over 50 years, Jamey Aebersold has been the leader in Jazz Improvisation and Education. Jamey has taught at three colleges and universities and has made guest appearances around the world. He has produced a best-selling DVD on jazz improvisation. Jamey's hobby is listening to jazz, especially new, young players. He enjoys playing basketball (He once hit 53 free throws in a row, and 26 three pointers ) and is interested in Metaphysics and spiritual pursuits. Jamey is a driving force in Jazz, and continues to kindle the fires of musical imagination in those with whom he comes in contact.

Sean Dobbins
Sean Dobbins is an Associate Instructor and may co-lead combo and special sessions and will float between groups to offer drum, rhythm, and horn input.
Sean Dobbins got his start at a young age when he would regularly perform with Blue Note recording artist Louis Smith. As Sean's Career progressed he found himself the recipient of many awards and accolades including the Woody Herman Jazz Award and the Louis Armstrong Scholarship, each of them celebrating outstanding musicianship. Due to his talent both as a performer and an educator Sean has been the focus of countless news articles and media programs. In addition, the 2015 Michigan Jazz Festival was dedicated to him for his outstanding musicianship, leadership and mentorship in the Metro Detroit jazz community.
Though still young by jazz standards, Dobbins has amassed an impressive list of playing companions. He has performed/toured/ recorded with Roy Hargrove, Benny Golson, Dr. Lonnie Smith, Frank Morgan, Joey DeFrancesco, George Cables, Barbara Morrison, Tamir Hendilman, James "Blood" Ulmer, Marcus Belgrave, Larry Willis, Rodney Whitaker, Claude Black, Johnny O’Neal, Sheila Jordan, Jon Hendricks, David "Fathead" Newman, Johnny Basset, Donald Walden, Cyrus Chestnut, Barry Harris, David Baker, Randy Johnston, Ralphe Armstrong, Mose Allison and a host of other great musicians. Sean's sound can best be described as hard-driving solid rhythm with refreshing melodic sensibility. Some of his influences include Art Blakey, Jeff Hamilton, Jeff "Tain" Watts, Ed Thigpen, Sonny Payne as well as Detroit area greats Louis Hayes and the one and only Elvin Jones. Sean has performed on countless recordings as a sideman and has released multiple albums as a leader and co-leader.

During this time he began his professional career, performing all over the midwest and beyond. After graduating, Stefan decided to try his luck in the international jazz scene of New Orleans, LA. Here he performed hundreds of times during his first year in town, sometimes with members of the famed Preservation Jazz Hall and opposite other musicians he had grown up listening to. In the wake of the COVID-19 pandemic, Stefan relocated to Indiana and picked up where he left off, rekindling connections with some of his favorite Indiana musicians. He has performed with Mark Buselli, Rob Dixon, Brad Goode, Michael Spiro, Pat Harbison, and a host of others. He is an adjunct professor of jazz bass at the University of Indianapolis and has been an educator and clinician throughout the state of Indiana.

Ana Nelson is an Associate Instructor and will lead combo and special sessions.
Ana is a clarinetist, saxophonist, composer, and arranger known for her multi-genre diversity in jazz and classical styles. Ana has performed with Michael Spiro’s “Descarga 5,” the Buselli-Wallarab Ensemble, and the NelBap Duo. She was recently awarded a Presser Graduate Award from Indiana University to record a studio album melding genres of jazz, classical, and Latin jazz. In January of 2020, Ana was awarded the Earl Hines Outstanding Soloist Award presented by Wynton Marsalis at the Jack Rudin Jazz Championship. Ana received a master’s degree in jazz studies and clarinet performance at Indiana University and is currently pursuing a Doctorate in Clarinet Performance at IU. As an educator, Ana founded the Virtual Woodwind Academy in 2020, a virtual woodwind education program bringing affordable and high-quality education to participants from the comfort of their home. Her debut album "Bridges" is available on most platforms.

Pianist, composer, and arranger Jamaal Baptiste grew up on the island of Aruba, a nexus for the music of the Americas and Europe. Jamaal is comfortable performing in a wide range of musical settings, with experience in Jazz, Blues, R&B, Gospel, Latin, Brazilian, and Caribbean music. Jamaal performs with the NelBap Duo, and is a member of the Batuquê Trio based in Bloomington, Indiana. He is also an original member of Ritmos Unidos, a collaboration from seven-time Grammy nominee and percussionist, Michael Spiro. In 2016, Jamaal graduated with a master's degree in jazz studies at the Indiana University Jacobs School of Music, where he is currently pursuing a Doctor of Philosophy in ethnomusicology in the Department of Folklore and Ethnomusicology.
